Salt

A salt is random data mixed into password hashing so identical passwords do not produce identical hashes.

Last updated:

A salt is a per-password random value stored with a hash. Hashing password + salt means two users with the same password get different hashes, which breaks simple rainbow tables.

Why it matters

Salting is a server-side storage concern. Users still need unique secrets because unsalted legacy systems and credential stuffing still exist.
