Frequently asked questions
Expanded answers about PassTip tools, privacy, and deployment. Also see the homepage FAQ, compare, and glossary.
Is my password ever sent to your servers?
No. PassTip runs entirely in your browser. Passwords are generated locally using your device's cryptographic random number generator, and no password data is transmitted to PassTip servers. Even offline, generation works the same way.
How does the WiFi QR code work?
PassTip encodes your WiFi network name and password into a standard QR code format. Anyone with a smartphone can scan the code with their camera to connect — no typing. Prefer a guest network when sharing. Open the WiFi panel.
What's the difference between a password and a passphrase?
A password is a random string of characters; a passphrase is a series of words separated by a delimiter. Passphrases are often easier to remember. Generate a passphrase.
Can I use PassTip on my phone without installing it?
Yes. PassTip works in modern mobile browsers without installation. Install as a PWA (Add to Home Screen) for offline access.
How secure are the generated passwords?
Each character uses crypto.getRandomValues. A 16-character mixed password has roughly 95 bits of entropy. Still use unique passwords per site and store them in a manager.
Does PassTip store any of my data or browsing history?
Passwords and WiFi settings stay in your browser session and are never stored on our servers. We use Google Analytics for anonymous usage stats — no password data is sent. Theme preference may be saved in localStorage. See the Privacy Policy.
Can I use PassTip for my team/company?
Yes for generating unique passwords and bulk CSV exports in the browser. PassTip is not a shared team vault — use a password manager for storage, sync, and access control. See how PassTip compares.
Does PassTip work on iOS Safari / Android Chrome?
Yes. It works in modern mobile browsers including iOS Safari and Android Chrome. Camera-based WiFi QR joining depends on the phone OS; most current devices support it.
What happens if I clear browser data?
PassTip does not persist generated passwords. Clearing site data removes theme preference and the offline cache. Re-open passtip.link online to refresh the app. Secrets already saved in a password manager are unaffected.
Can I self-host PassTip?
Yes. The project is available on GitHub. You can run the Node server or serve the Vite build yourself. You are responsible for updates, TLS, and analytics configuration.
How do I verify the code hasn't been tampered with?
Review the public repository, inspect client-side generation in your browser’s developer tools, and confirm you are on https://passtip.link with a valid certificate before generating secrets. Prefer the installed PWA after a trusted first load.
