PBKDF2

PBKDF2 is a widely deployed key-derivation function that slows password hashing with many iterations.

Last updated:

PBKDF2 (Password-Based Key Derivation Function 2) repeatedly applies a pseudorandom function to stretch a password into a key, increasing the cost of brute-force against stolen hashes.

Why it matters

It remains common in enterprise and browser crypto APIs. Newer designs like Argon2 often offer better resistance to GPU/ASIC attacks when configured correctly.
