Offline Password Generator PWA Guide
Online password generators range from excellent to actively hostile. Some phone home, inject ads, or look abandoned. A Progressive Web App (PWA) that works offline gives you a generator you control — on your device, even without a network.
PassTip is built as a privacy-first PWA: generation uses crypto.getRandomValues in the browser, and core tools keep working offline after install.
What “offline” really means here
Offline does not mean “no cryptography.” It means the app shell and scripts are cached by the service worker so you can open PassTip on a plane or with flaky WiFi and still create passwords, passphrases, and WiFi QR codes.
Breach checks still need the network (they query HIBP’s range API). Password generation itself does not.
Why PWAs beat random websites for this job
- Install once. Home-screen icon, full-screen feel, less chance of landing on a lookalike phishing domain next time.
- Works when DNS or captive portals fail. Hotels and travel are exactly when you need a new WiFi guest password.
- Clear trust boundary. You can inspect that logic runs locally; you are not hoping a third-party API “generates securely” on a server you cannot see.

On supported browsers, use the install prompt in the header when it appears.
How to install PassTip
- Desktop Chrome/Edge: install icon in the address bar or browser menu.
- Safari (iOS): Share → Add to Home Screen.
- Android Chrome: Install app / Add to Home Screen.
After install, open the app once online so assets cache, then try airplane mode and generate again.
Client-side generation checklist
Before you trust any generator — PWA or not — verify:
- Uses a CSPRNG (
crypto.getRandomValuesor equivalent), notMath.random. - Does not submit the password in forms to analytics or “save to cloud” by default.
- Documents what leaves the device (for PassTip: optional anonymous analytics page views; breach checks send hash prefixes only).
Pair offline generation with good hygiene
Generate offline, then store secrets in your password manager when you are back online. For many accounts:
For WiFi guest cards without cloud upload:
When you still need the network
- First visit / updates (to refresh the cached app).
- Breach checks.
- Loading fonts or analytics if those features are enabled — generation still works if those fail.
Bottom line
An offline-capable PWA is the practical middle ground between a native app store download and a disposable webpage. Install PassTip once, generate locally forever (until you choose to update), and stop pasting passwords into mystery generators.
